Interesting State House Facts

The Alabama State Senate is composed of 35 Senators, exactly one-third the size of the House of Representatives, and each Senator represents a district of approximately 137,000 Alabamians. The State House was opened in 1963 as the Alabama Highway Department Building. It housed the Alabama Department of Transportation, then known as the Alabama State Highway Department, until 1985, when the Alabama Legislature moved into the upper floors while the Alabama State Capitol was being renovated. Article IV, Section 48 of the Alabama Constitution requires the Legislature to meet in the Capitol, but Amendment 427 was passed to enable it to select another place to temporarily meet until renovations at the Capitol were complete. Although all major renovations were completed there in 1992, the Legislature has remained at the State House. The building was renamed after the 1985 move. Originally, the Legislature occupied the 5th through 7th floors. When the Legislature outgrew this space, an eighth floor was added.

We look forward to seeing you there!

2026 Alabama Section Winter Meeting

The ASCE Alabama Section Winter Meeting Conference, hosted by the ASCE Mobile Branch, was an outstanding success! With more than 130 attendees from across the State, this year’s conference showcased the strength, professionalism, and camaraderie of civil engineers throughout Alabama.

We were honored to have the Mayor of Mobile kick off the conference, discussing Civil Engineering projects and challenges, setting the tone for what proved to be an engaging and informative agenda. The program featured excellent local presentations and discussions that highlighted important projects, emerging trends, and the impactful work our members are doing in their communities every day.

Beyond the technical sessions, one of the most meaningful aspects of the Winter Meeting was the opportunity to connect. The networking throughout the conference was exceptional. As colleagues reconnected, new professional relationships were formed, and old friends had the chance to catch up. These moments of fellowship are what truly make our Alabama Section strong.

A very special and sincere thank you goes to our sponsors and exhibitors. Your support made this event possible. From the quality of the venue to the overall experience for attendees, your investment in the Alabama Section and the profession does not go unnoticed. We simply could not host a successful conference without you.

Thank you to everyone who attended, presented, sponsored, and volunteered. The 2026 Winter Meeting was a tremendous success, and we look forward to building on this momentum as we continue serving the civil engineering community across Alabama.

2025 Summer Meeting

The Alabama Section of the American Society of Engineers along with the Alabama Chapter of the American Public Works Association, held its 2025 Annual Engineering Conference from July 17–19, 2025, in Orange Beach, Alabama, bringing together professionals, educators, and students from across the state for three days of learning and collaboration. The event featured a robust program that included technical presentations, professional development sessions, and panel discussions on topics such as sustainable infrastructure, emerging technologies, and engineering leadership. Keynote speakers from across the industry shared insights into the evolving challenges and opportunities within the engineering profession, while exhibitors showcased the latest tools, materials, and innovations shaping the field.

In addition to the technical program, the conference provided numerous opportunities for networking and fellowship among attendees. Evening receptions and social events allowed participants to connect in a relaxed coastal setting, fostering collaboration and professional growth beyond the formal sessions. The picturesque backdrop of Orange Beach added to the conference’s success, offering attendees a chance to enjoy the Gulf Coast’s scenic beauty while engaging in meaningful professional exchange.
