The 2011 Alabama Section Summer Meeting is in the books and was a success! We returned to the Conference Center at The Wharf Resort.  We had 142 registered attendees and speakers, plus 17 exhibitors, for a total of 159 attending the event. The technical program consisted of two tracks with a total of 23 speakers covering structural, environmental, transportation, and geotechnical topics in civil engineering.  44 people enjoyed an afternoon of golf on Friday at Soldiers Creek Golf Club with the help of 12 generous tournament sponsors.

One of the highlights of the technical program was the opening presentation by Ms. Tara Tubbs of the City of Tuscaloosa.  She held the opening session captive with her description of the damage caused by the April 27, 2011 tornado and the amazing response and recovery by the city.

Jorge Cacciatore of the University of Alabama in Huntsville was named Outstanding Civil Engineering Student of the Year, earning a $3,500 scholarship from the Section.

A big thank you to the 17 exhibitors and 27 sponsors that helped make the meeting possible, and to the 12 sponsors of the golf tournament.

A wrap up of the meeting, including the list of Exhibitors and Sponsors can be downloaded here.

The Fall 2010 Technical Seminar of the Alabama Geo-Institute Chapter was a great success!  We had 39 attendees at our seminar on October 21, 2010 at the Associated Building Contractors building in Birmingham.  The attendees were able to obtain 6 professional development hours in geotechnical engineer topics.  The morning session covered micropile design and construction taught by Rupert Hon, P.E. and Kevin Bolton of Layne GeoConstruction.  After a scrumptious lunch catered by Ashley Macs, Andres Baquerizo, P.E. of HJ Foundation taught the afternoon session, covering augercast pile design and construction.

We want to extend a big THANK YOU to Layne Geoconstruction and HJ Foundation for providing the sessions and making this seminar a success.  Also thanks to Jim Pegues, P.E. (Chapter Past-President) for doing most of the work organizing the seminar, and David Johnson, P.E. (Chapter Vice President) for helping with all of the details of location, refreshments, and supplies.

A few pictures can be found at the Alabama Section ASCE Picasa Web Albums here.  Or check out the slide show below.

We look forward to this being an annual event that provides relevant instruction for our members to obtain their continuing education each year.   Keep an eye out next summer for announcements on next year's location and topics.
