Alabama Section Winter Meeting 2011 - Registration Open (and on-line, too!)

Registration is now open for the 2011 Winter Meeting of the Alabama Section. The meeting will be March 10, 2011 at the ALAGASCO Center for Energy Technology in Birmingham. There is a theme for the meeting - Creating a Sustainable World. The technical program will have speakers representing a cross-section of civil engineering disciplines.

For the first time, on-line registration is available! The link below will take you to the meeting website. To register, you can download, complete, print and mail the registration form with a check. You can also submit the form via e-mail (there is a button on the form) and submit payment via Google Checkout courtesy of the Birmingham Branch.

Alabama Section SUMMER Meeting Committee - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED (and make note of the date, too!)

While the Birmingham Branch is in high gear getting the 2011 Winter Meeting in place for March 10th, the Summer Meeting Committee wants to get folks thinking about helping out with the planning and organizing for our Summer Meeting July 27th - 29th. The Call for Papers will need to go out in March so that the program can be finalized by May, the speakers selected and scheduled, sponsors and Exhibitors need to be contacted, and lots of other details need to be handled to make the meeting a success.

We would like to have a couple of people from each Branch on the committee, helping in all areas. We have a small core group that needs more help! Now is the time if you have wanted to get involved in something at the Section level.

In support of NLE2011 the Alabama Emergency Management Agency will be hosting the FEMA 154 Rapid Visual Screening and the ACT 20 Post Earthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings courses. Alabama Section is now an Approved Florida Provider!

Yes, that's right! The Alabama Section of ASCE has been approved as a provider of continuing education credits for the Florida Board of Licensure. What does this mean? Well, it means that at future Section technical meetings, Institute Chapter technical meetings, and even Branch technical meetings can be reported for continuing education credits for your Florida license. At future Section meetings, there will be a sign in sheet for those wishing to claim credit fro their Florida PE. You will need to sign the sheet, providing your Florida PE license number. At the end of the meeting, you will need to note how many hours you will be claiming for credit with Florida. The Section will report those hours to the Florida BOL. Licensees CAN NOT self-report CE hours in Florida.

For those that attended the Summer 2010 meeting and would like to have CE hours reported for this renewal cycle, please reply to this message with your name (preferably as it appears on your license), your FL PE number, and the number of hours you are claiming.

Expand into an exciting new market by becoming a certified Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rater!

Between November 1, 2009 and October 31, 2011, the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) and Southface are partnering to reimburse the entire cost of HERS training to the first 30 Alabama residents who attend a HERS training program at Southface in Atlanta, Georgia, and become certified HERS raters.

Becoming a certified HERS Rater is the first step to offering a variety of services to homebuilders, homeowners and real estate professionals, including:

Certifying that a home meets the requirements of green building programs such as EarthCraft and LEED^Â® for Homes
Qualifying ENERGY STAR^Â® New Homes
Providing verification for Energy Efficient Mortgages (EEMs)
Providing energy assessments and recommendations on how to increase energy efficiency for existing homes

Alabama Section ASCE 2010 Summer Meeting Wrap-up

The 2010 Alabama Section Summer Meeting brought us to a new venue â The Conference Center at The Wharf Resort. By all accounts, the new venue was excellent and the meeting another great success. We had 151 attendees and 19 exhibitors at the event. The technical program consisted of two tracks with a total of 24 speakers covering structural, environmental, transportation, and geotechnical topics in civil engineering. 34 people enjoyed an afternoon of golf on Friday at Glen Lakes in Foley.

Lane Morrison of the University of Alabama was named Outstanding Civil Engineering Student of the Year, earning a $3,500 scholarship from the Section.

A big THANK YOU to the 19 exhibitors and 13 sponsors that helped make the meeting possible, and to the 9 sponsors of the golf tournament.
